Tea in Zhejiang
Zhejiang Province has held a significant position in Chinese tea production. The early record of its tea-cultivation can be dated back to the 2nd century. In the 8th century 3 out of 18 tribute teas to the court were from here. From 1843 to 1894 average 400,000 cases of tea were exported to Europe each year. However, pounded by the rise of India and Ceylon in the mid-20th century, most tea-gardens here lay waste. Recovered from 1950s, Zhejiang produces more teas than any other Chinese province, making up 22% of the national green tea production. By 2006 its well-known teas increased to 42.
