This tea won its fame as soon as it was formulated in 1959 by Hunan Tea Research Institute, which is located at the eastern suburb of Changsha. The tea name describes its hairy appearance. It is said that this tea have more tonic properties than many other green teas.

The harvest starts from the beginning of April. The standard picking is one shoot with one leaf, and standard length is one inch. 6,000 young leaves would make one pound of tea. The most unique procedure in its making is reshaping, which shakes loose the flattened leaf hair caused by rolling. The output is about one hundred kilogram a year.
Changsha is surrounded by mountains. Tea form there can be traced back to the 15th century. The city is also celebrated for its excavated historical relics.
